Guelph Win Back The Cup
Monday, 05 July 2010 17:07

With the rest of the Ontario Australian Football League on a bye week for the Canada Day weekend, the Ottawa Swans welcomed the Guelph Gargoyles down to the grounds at the Rideau Carleton Raceway to battle for the 4th Annual Canada Day Cup. And with the prized Cup on the line, both teams came prepared to uphold this stellar and competitive rivalry.

In hot and humid conditions, both teams battled from the opening bounce, regrettably, the first half did not produce the results the Swans had hoped for as Guelph was able to capitalize in the first quarter with the wind at their back and ran out to an early lead. In the second quarter, the home team was able put pressure on the Gargoyle defensive line,
however, was unable to efficiently use the tailwind to their advantage and remained behind as the horn sounded at halftime.

The third quarter would prove to be a seesaw battle, as both sides were able to cultivate several offensive opportunities. The Swans were guilty of some wayward kicks and as a result
were unsuccessful in reducing the gap on the scoreboard. By the fourth quarter, the Swans were able to put together a solid effort on all fronts and were finally able to produce positive results on the scoreboard. In a veritable offensive onslaught, the Swans were able to score 5 goals in the final quarter. Unfortunately, the home side’s come-from-behind effort fell short of time as the Gargoyles ran out the victory and left the ground with the Canada Cup in-hand.

Coach Chris MacLean praised the efforts of the Swans to run out a full four quarters of play. “The fourth quarter really epitomizes what our team is capable of. We’ll be looking to
build off this solid play and bring it forward into the second half of the season.”

The Swans will look to turn things around and pick up their first win of the season against the Broadview Hawks at the Rideau Carleton Raceway, next Saturday at 2pm.
