The Ottawa Swans women’s side picked up another win on June 23, leading them to sit comfortably in second place in the six-team women’s Ontario Australian Football League competition.

The Lady Swans beat the Hamilton Wildcats with ease and controlled the ball throughout the entire game.

The Swans went into the first quarter with one aim: getting the first goal. They successfully did just that, and went on to score five more, while only allowing one goal for the opposition.

The Wildcats rarely had the ball in the back 15 metres of the Swans territory, and were marked by the defensive play of Margo Legault, Lisa Dalla Rosa, Amanda Paradis, Brier Dodge and Catherine Geci.

The Swans challenged on offense as well, with Emma Dickinson and Holly Costanza darting around players to carry the ball down the field.

Meghan Hancock and Amanda Paradis were solid forwards, keeping the Wildcats defense on their toes.

Paradis played the entire game despite an unknown broken finger from a training session earlier in the week, and Costanza rallied back from a leg injury to be a dominant force on the field.

It was a team effort when it came to scoring, with five different Swans players kicking goals.

With six behinds, the Swans are confident that improvement with kicking skills can translate into more goals.

The heat didn’t stopping the Lady Swans from running hard and keeping their heads over the ball throughout the game. At the final siren, they came away easy victors, 42-8.

The Swans will next play at home on July 7 at the Rideau Carleton Raceway against the Central Blues.

Goals: Emma Dickinson (2), Holly Constanza, Margo Legault, Ricki-Lee Pitman, Meghan Hancock
