Men qualify for finals round

Men qualify for finals round

On Aug. 31, the men extended their winning streak to five games, beating the third-ranked Toronto Eagles 100-31 and qualifying for playoffs.

It’s the first time in club history that the men’s team has made the playoff rounds.

“We solidified what we’ve been working on all year,” said coach Rod Frank. “We’ve developed our “Swans Brand” of footy, and played that game.”

The “Swans Brand” of footy’s key traits are hard work, winning contested battles, polish, and a never say die spirit that has resulted in several close wins this season.

Frank, an Australian-import, joined the club this year in the head coaching role.

Early in the first quarter, the Swans got up on the scoreboard.

They were able to maintain the lead throughout the entire game, scoring four goals in the first quarter, two in the second, four in the third, and locking it in with five in the last 20 minutes of the day.

“Every player has a role, every play did it’s job,” Frank said. “From coach, interchange, water runners, everyone did their job to support team success.”

The defensive line was solid and consistent, allowing few scoring opportunities for the Eagles. The centre line was polished and hard-working throughout the day, and the forwards had excellent execution.

Frank’s top players of the day were Jay Goldhawk, Brendan Woods, Darren Roffey, Nathan Strom and Ronan Shaugnessy.

This year’s motto for the team has been “be the first.”

Whether that was first to the ball, first time the men and women’s team won a double header, first to win so many consecutive games in a row, or first team to qualify finals, the Swans have one challenge left: first to win the premiership title.

The Ottawa Swans will play the Toronto Rebels in round one of the playoffs at Humber South field in Toronto on Sept. 7. The women will also play in round one against the Etobicoke Roos.

Swans 15.10 (100) def. Toronto Eagles 5.2 (32) at home at the Rideau Carleton Raceway to advance to finals.
