Strong season kick-off in dome

Strong season kick-off in dome

The Swans are already preparing for the 2013 season, with a strong showing at the first indoor field training session of the year on Feb. 2.

There were strong numbers of both female and male players, and returning vets and new recruits.

“It was encouraging to see so many new and returning players at our first indoor dome session on Saturday,” said men’s assistant coach Darren Roffey. “I anticipate that with continual practice, our skills will eventually more than match our level of enthusiasm. All in all, it bodes well not only for the upcoming season, but also the Swans’ Metro league which starts this week.”

Roffey will be joined by Ashley Vance as the second assistant coach for the 2013 season. Vance is an experienced Australian player and coach, and will be a valuable addition to the Swans squad this year.

The two hour training session served as an introduction to new players and a refresher on Metro league rules for those returning.

The Swans also welcomed several Montreal players, and look forward to continuing the partnership with the Quebec Saints and Angels in the upcoming year.

Returning women’s coach Chris Lockhart said that it was an excellent kick-off to the 2013 pre-season.

“I’m very excited about the pre-season and upcoming regular season,” Lockhart said. “I can see a lot of potential in all the new recruits, and I am very happy with the fitness levels of returning players.”

With the first training session under their belts, Swans players are ready to kick off the footy Metro league, divided into four teams who will play on Thursday evenings at the Hornet’s Nest dome in Gloucester, located at 1660 Bearbrook Rd.

Any new players who wish to join the Metro league still have time, or are welcome to play on a drop-in basis for a $10 cost per game, providing there is available space.

The Feb. 7 game will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m., with the remainder of Metro games being held from 6 to 7 p.m.

Free training is also ongoing on Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 from 9 to 10 p.m. at Lisgar Collegiate’s gymnasium.
