Strong season kick-off in dome

Men lose to current leaders

Round 9 of the AFL Ontario season saw the Ottawa Swans travel down to Toronto for the final time in 2015 to once again take on the reigning premier – and ladder leading – Broadview Hawks.

A disappointing day saw the Swans handily defeated. In very hot and humid conditions the Swans could not field an optimum team to take on the Hawks, and consequently paid the price missing out on the 4 points.

To the team that did assemble and travel down, full credit for playing out the 80 minutes in the heat, and some very good performances were on display, and some valuable knowledge about the Hawks was gained.

An excellent first quarter saw the Swans take the lead early, and continued clearances saw the ball delivered inside 50 multiple times. Getting the match ups right against the dangerous Hawks with so many regular Swans players absent was very challenging for Assistant Coach Matthew Powell. This meant many players found themselves outside their comfort zone. Nevertheless, good endeavour and hardness at the ball was shown throughout which meant the Swans came in at quarter time evenly matched.

The second quarter saw the Hawks start to get on top around the ground, particularly in the center and across their forward line. A significantly depleted Swans backline meant the Hawks could capitalize with relative ease and it wasn’t long before the game started to get beyond our reach.

The third and fourth quarters saw the Swans continue to battle, but ultimately to no avail. Again to those that made the effort and worked so hard on the day, well done to you all.

Round 10 sees the Swans return back to Ottawa for their final stretch of home games, beginning against the Etobicoke Kangaroos on Saturday August 8 at Strandherd Park.
