Canada Cup leaves Ottawa

Round 6 of the 2015 AFL Ontario season saw the Ottawa Swans drive down the 401 to take on the Grand River Gargoyles at Margaret Greene park for the Canada Day Cup.

Extremely wet conditions translated into a scrappy game with scoring shots at a premium. The 1st term was very solid and ultimately saw the Swans match every effort Grand River could muster. Excellent work from the likes of Morgan Whyte and Nathan Strom in the midfield, and Matthew Powell again showing class to clear the ball from congestion, helped the Swans dominate around the clearances.

Coming into the 1st term huddle the Swans had the ascendancy and momentum. However, once the 2nd quarter started, an abundance of free kicks paid against the Swans for poor and sloppy tackling efforts and being second to the ball curtailed any continued efforts. To their credit Grand River took full advantage and piled on the goals, thereby essentially setting themselves up for the win.

The 3rd and 4th quarters saw the Swans again dominate proceedings with good clearance work, forward entry and defensive efforts when needed. With 10 minutes left to play the Swans trailed by 3 points, but despite their best efforts they could not score that last vital goal. Full credit to all the players for not just making the long trip down, but for playing the game out and almost stealing it in the end. The Swans attitude and camaraderie was a hallmark on a very trying day.

After a well-deserved week off, Round 7 sees the Swans up against the Toronto Dingos at 2pm at Strandherd Park (4061 Strandherd Dr). Preceding the Men’s game will be a Women’s game that’ll see the Ottawa Swans vs Montreal Angels at 12pm.
