Lady Swans to play in the 2014 Grand Final

The Lady Swans arrived at their home field focused and determined to secure a spot in the Grand Final in an elimination match against Toronto’s Central Blues last Saturday.

Despite heavy rain and low temperatures, the Swans looked strong as they consistently maintained control at every line. Nathalie Pressault and the backline kept the Blues at bay, giving up only two goals.

Margo Legault’s mid-game switch from the backs to the midfield saw her push hard at every contest to gain advantage, and little sister Aimee dominated the middle of the ground, kicking a long bomb goal that secured the Swans lead.

Although the ball was wet and heavy, Emma Dickinson managed quick pick-ups and two goals while on the run from Blues defenders. Captain Holly Costanza welcomed hard contests at full forward, while Alisa Dafoe used her strong marking and Ash Scott her relentless speed to each get a goal from the forward pockets.

At the final siren, straight kicking and good ball movement saw the Swans defeat the Blues 5.3 (33) to 2.6 (18).  This win was history making, as it is the first every Grand Final birth for the Ottawa Swans Club.

Later that night, the Lady Swans maintained their good form while celebrating the upcoming nuptials of Ricki-Lee Pitman, one of the original Swanettes, and the ladies proved they have great moves on and off the field!

The Lady Swans face Hamilton in the AFL Ontario Grand Final on Saturday at 12pm at Humber South.  They are determined to bring the cup to the Capital.  “This is what we have been working for all year”, said Coach Lockhart at their last training session. The girls want “happy tears” at the final siren tomorrow.
