Lady Swans own the Day! Ottawa Swans dominate Montreal Angels

The Ottawa Swans Australian Football Club women’s team put on an impressive performance against the Montreal Angels in the second full field contest of the year. After getting out to a strong start, the Swans kept the pressure up and made it difficult for the Angels to get anything going. When the final siren sounded, the Swans claimed victory 75-13.

Right from the first bounce Rebecca Gomez excelled in the ruck, winning the majority of taps and setting it up for the midfield to push the ball into the forward 50. The midfield were on display all afternoon, locking in the Angels and preventing them from clearing the ball out of their zone.

Center half forward Belinda Wozniak led the way with 5 goals for the Swans, who as a team finished with an efficient 11 goals 9 behinds. Anke Patzelt was voted player’s player for her contribution thought the middle of the ground and effective kicking into the forward line.

For the Angels, a tough afternoon got even tougher as a number of players were injured early on, placing a heavy burden on the remaining players to work shorthanded. On the big ground at the Manotick Polo Club they tried to keep the ball away from the wings, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the Swans.

The Swans have now won both contests against the Angels and will play a final full field game August 20th.

On the men’s side, a depleted Hamilton Wildcats were forced to forfeit after being unable to field a full squad. The victory gives the Swans a 6-1 record, moving them into first place on the AFL Ontario ladder after the Toronto Rebels suffered their first defeat of the season.

As the Swans enter the final stretch of the season the men will take on the strong Central Blues at the Manotick Polo Club on July 23rd. Ball up will be at 2pm.

The women will join forces with the Montreal Angels and represent AFL Quebec at an all-star game against the best of AFL Ontario. They will play at 4pm following the men’s game. All are welcome to attend.
