Take a look at our most frequently asked questions to familiarize yourself with Australian Football.

Do you need any experience?

No! We have players with a variety of backgrounds, from rugby to basketball to individual sports. You don’t need to have any knowledge of the sport to get involved.

How much commitment is required?

From April until September, we train twice a week, with games on Saturdays. We play in the AFL Ontario league with trips to Toronto several times in the season to play. The expected regular season is 10 games for the men’s team, and 8 games for the women’s team. We train once a week through most of the off-season. We love to have players at as much training sessions as possible, but we recognize that there are outside commitments, and that players may have to miss training or a few games.

Where do you play?

Our home field is at the Manotick Polo Club, but we do train at different locations around the city pending field scheduling. Away games often take place in the GTA.

When and where do you train?

How much does it cost?

Our fees vary from season to season due to changes in costs of insurance and operational costs, but generally will be in the range of $250 to $350 (which historically has included a ticket to the clubs end of season banquet)

How much contact is there?

Footy is a contact sport, and tackling is a part of the game. The rules are designed to protect the player though, and tackles cannot be above the shoulder, or below the knee. There are also “kicking in danger” rules in place to protect the head, meaning if you are bent down, close to the ball, the opposing player cannot kick at it.

Can I get to the games if I don't have a car?

We have a player-base all over the city and often carpool to get to training and games

I feel out of shape, can I still play?

We take all level of athletes, and don’t make cuts to our team. But get ready to run in training!

How long are the games?

Currently, men’s games are four 20-minute quarters. Women’s games are four 15-minute quarters.

How many people play at once?

Standard is 18 a side, though the women’s league is still growing and has less on the field at once. Men consistently play 18 a side.
