Swans Soar to Victory: Ottawa Triumphs in Men’s and Women’s Matches

The Ottawa Swans Australian Football Club had a successful weekend as both their men’s and women’s teams secured victories against the Hamilton Wildcats on July 22. The women’s team put on a dominant display, defeating the Wildcats with a scoreline of 5.6 (36) to 2.1 (13). Meanwhile, the men’s team showcased their prowess, triumphing over the Wildcats with a scoreline of 7.13 (55) to 3.4 (22). 

Before the matches, Coach Yaser Abou Elenein exuded confidence in his team’s abilities. He highlighted the team’s focus on skill work and pressure, aiming to move the ball cleanly while exerting immense pressure on their opponents. Having recently played against the Wildcats, Coach Yaser believed that understanding their opponents better would aid in securing a favorable outcome.

In the women’s division, Leah McNamee was named Co-Player of the Match by the team, alongside Camila Rubiano, earning well-deserved recognition for her outstanding performance. McNamee’s two crucial goals were a highlight of the game, and she expressed her excitement about the achievement. “I was thrilled about kicking my first 2 goals on Saturday. Since I started playing last year, I have been very close to getting a goal and, recently, I feel like I am starting to really grasp the overall game,” said McNamee. She also praised her team’s cohesion and improved understanding of the game, which contributed to their success.

 

The women’s team faced its fair share of challenges this season, but their hard work and dedication in training, focusing on skill development and team drills, played a pivotal role in securing the crucial points. McNamee acknowledged the team’s progress and stated, “We have focused on everyone’s different strengths and how we can best support one another. We have worked on where we should be to support other players in different situations and worked on leading drills which I believe both helped us secure the goals.”

 

On the men’s side, Coach Joshua La Porta praised his team’s execution of the game plan, utilizing the wings and strong defense to counter the Wildcats’ efforts. Jonathan “Jono” Burnett’s exceptional performance was a key factor in the Swans’ victory, showcasing his solid skills and aggression. Other players who stood out in the match were Chris Savov, Riley Turpin, and James Clock, all contributing significantly to the team’s success.

Jono, named Men’s Player’s Player of the Match, was ecstatic about the team’s morale-boosting win. Burnett, who has been an integral part of the team for eight years, reflected on his journey with the Swans. “It has been an amazing 8-year journey for me with the Swans, and I am really sad to be hanging up the boots,” said Burnett. As a seasoned player, captain, and teammate, he has made lasting friendships and achieved significant milestones with the club.

 

As the regular season nears its conclusion, both the men’s and women’s teams are gearing up for three more challenging games. Coach La Porta highlighted the importance of increased training attendance to strengthen team unity for a potential finals run. Similarly, Burnett expressed confidence in the team’s potential to be top contenders this year, given their recent stellar performances.
